Originally by: Andrea Tesla I personally did try WoW as well as about a dozen other MMOGs before and during playing EVE.
I do not hate WoW as a game per se, but I hate a few "after effects" coming from WoW.
- People, who play WoW, tend to believe, that Blizzard did invent the MMOG-genre. This is entirely untrue. In fact WoW did copy a whole bunch of "innovations" from previous MMOGs, like DAoC, EQ2 and UO. - The fact that millions do play WoW does not automatically make it a better game. Just because Millions of flies eat crap, does not mean, I need to do it to, or that it is good for me. - The millions of WoW player generate an abnormal high level of "white noise".. as in WoW-Fanbois, who come to other games and feel it necessary to point out, that WoW is far better than that game. - People try to change EVE in a way to suit the average WoW-Player... which I like to call "babysitting-mode". The main curse of EVE is to be a harsh unforgiving world. Check out the 2007 Aprils fools joke by CCP, to see, how EVE would look like, if the Devs would make it "mass-compatible" like WoW is. - I personally believe, that WoWs massive success is owed to the marketing of Blizzard and to their good name from previous titles... not to the game WoW itself. Had the same game be released by an unknown company without the fan-group of Warcraft, noone would speak about that game today.
A while back some newbie on german channel complained, that he could only fly one ship in EVE... He bloated about having 5 mounts in Wow and that it would be all the better !! (being a typical 'less than a day' newbie)... I asked him "And how many of those 5 mounts can you ride at the same time ?" He was gone, never to be heard about again...
WoW has its playerbase. Wow might not even be a bad game for them. Heck, I tried it out myself (12 days in the trial, I had nothing more to do and was bored).
It is the after effects, that irk me, and which lead me to throw veldspar-roids on people, who mention it on German channel.
WoW is not and has never been the godfather of MMOG. If you really honestly look at it, WoW got as much and as little innovation as every other MMOG that came before and after it. Most important innovation of WoW was Instances, which in MY opinion is the absolute curse to MMOG, as in instances, there is no "MASSIVE"-Multiplaying.

This, with the only difference that I do hate WoW for personal reasons as well: - Because Blizzard made World of Warcraft and not World of Diablo. - Elves and Dwarfes. I hate Tolkienbased fantasysettings - Graphics are horrible - Because our first supergroup in City of Heroes failed because half the players left for WoW
And because roughly 95% of the people I know in RL who play WoW really are obnoxious lasy gits
